This is why Netflix is canceling people's inactive subscriptions

Netflix is announcing they’re going to be deactivating all accounts which haven’t been used in over a year.

The streaming service says they’re asking customers who haven’t streamed anything in 12 months since subscribing whether they would like to keep their membership.

If users don’t respond to their email notification about subscribing again, they’ll simply have their accounts deactivated.

According to a post from Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu, accounts like this represent less than 0.5 percent of their subscriber base, representing “only a few hundred thousand.”

If a user does cancel their Netflix subscription or doesn’t respond, the company is keeping their favorites, profiles, viewing preferences and account details for 10 months. In a scenario where they decide later to subscribe again, their info will be put back in place.

If you’re wondering why they’re making this move, it’s simply a goodwill thing according to Wu. He says “we hope this new approach saves people some hard-earned cash” in the post.

It’s a two-fold situation where not only do they look good to customers by letting them know they are conscious of the costs they’re asking for, they also could garner more frequent visits from returning subscribers.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Netflix is bringing in a record 15.8 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2020. Still, they’re not expecting that kind of boom to last long term.

CEO Reed Hastings was recently telling investors last month that the streaming giant is expecting slower subscriber growth in the second quarter following the initial bump.
