Netflix making more interactive content after ‘Bandersnatch’ success

Netflix is looking to make more interactive content after the success of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Netflix’s Vice President Of Product, Todd Yellin, told a crowd in Mumbai on Tuesday this information. It was during a keynote presentation at the 20th edition of media and entertainment conference FICCI-Frames.

“It’s a huge hit here in India. It’s a huge hit around the world, and we realized, wow, interactive storytelling is something we want to bet more on,” he said during the speech. “We’re doubling down on that. So expect over the next year or two to see more interactive storytelling.

“And it won’t necessarily be science fiction, or it won’t necessarily be dark,” he continued. “It could be a wacky comedy. It could be a romance, where the audience gets to choose—should she go out with him, or him?”

He also discussed the company’s plans to further expand Indian content production.

Netflix released Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Dec. 28. Previously, many people believed that there would just be one “choose your own adventure” episode in the series. However, Netflix developed an entire spinoff film instead.

The company came under fire this week for the Black Mirror film as they are being sued for possible trademark infringement.

Chooseco, publisher of the children’s Choose Your Own Adventure book series, is suing Netflix for using the phrase in Bandersnatch. The film, a spinoff of the popular TV series, allows for the user to make choices that determine the ending.  

The company claims they negotiated with Netflix in 2016 about the phrase being used for the series. However, they say Netflix never got the license to use it.

“Netflix has no license or authorization to use Chooseco’s trademark and, upon information and belief, used the mark willfully and intentionally to capitalize on viewers’ nostalgia for the original book series,” the lawsuit states. “The film’s dark and, at times, disturbing content dilutes the goodwill for and positive associations with Chooseco’s mark and tarnishes its products.”
