Netflix announces next interactive adventure series

Get ready for a trip to the mountains, jungles and rugged terrain with none other than survival expert Bear Grylls on an upcoming Netflix series.

After recently stating they’re trying to include more interactive content, the streaming service has announced a new series. While you’ll still get to control what happens, this one is a different kind of adventure than what was seen in the streaming service’s first interactive film, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

The new series announcement comes after a statement made by Netflix’s Vice President Of Product, Todd Yellin, regarding the success of Bandersnatch and future plans for interactives.

“It’s a huge hit here in India. It’s a huge hit around the world, and we realized, wow, interactive storytelling is something we want to bet more on,” he said during the speech. “We’re doubling down on that. So expect over the next year or two to see more interactive storytelling.

“And it won’t necessarily be science fiction, or it won’t necessarily be dark,” he continued. “It could be a wacky comedy. It could be a romance, where the audience gets to choose—should she go out with him, or him?”

The streaming service is beginning to come through on their promise of more interactive content with new reality show You Vs. Wild.

According to IndieWire, You Vs. WIld will have the viewer take control of Grylls’ decisions as he travels through dangerous environments and threats. Whether Grylls succeeds or fails is in the hands of the viewer.

And you thought choosing between Sugar Puffs and Frosties was stressful. Unlike Bandersnatch, it will be a series consisting of eight episodes and will be designed to be more family-friendly.

As a preview for the show, Netflix has released a number of yes-or-no interactive videos. Check out the first of the interactive trailers below!

More on Netflix’s interactive content

The company recently came under fire for the Black Mirror film as they are being sued for possible trademark infringement.

Chooseco, publisher of the children’s Choose Your Own Adventure book series, is suing Netflix for using the phrase in Bandersnatch. The film, a spinoff of the popular TV series, allows for the user to make choices that determine the ending.

The company claims they negotiated with Netflix in 2016 about the phrase being used for the series. However, they say Netflix never got the license to use it.

“Netflix has no license or authorization to use Chooseco’s trademark and, upon information and belief, used the mark willfully and intentionally to capitalize on viewers’ nostalgia for the original book series,” the lawsuit states. “The film’s dark and, at times, disturbing content dilutes the goodwill for and positive associations with Chooseco’s mark and tarnishes its products.”
