Gerard Way’s Netflix series ‘The Umbrella Academy’ teases first look
Back in July 2017, we caught wind that Gerard Way’s comic The Umbrella Academy could potentially be getting a Netflix adaptation. A few days later, Way confirmed the series was headed to Netflix.
With a release date, plenty of cast information and hints getting dropped along the way, we are now receiving news that a “first look” is headed our way tomorrow.

Today, The Umbrella Academy’s Instagram page posted a simple video with the words “First Look Tomorrow.” The caption also reads “Grab your umbrellas.”
Nothing else is revealed, so we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see exactly what the “first look” entails.
The Umbrella Academy hits Netflix Feb. 15, 2019.
What we know about The Umbrella Academy so far
In Nov. 2017, Deadline revealed Ellen Page joined the cast. Later that month, Deadline reported Tom Hopper (Game Of Thrones), Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher joined the cast.
Page will play Vanya, the black sheep of her dysfunctional family of superheroes, known as the Umbrella Academy. The rest of the dysfunctional family include Luther (Hopper), Diego (Castañeda), Allison (Raver-Lampman), Vanya (Page), Klaus (Sheehan) and Number Five (Gallagher). The story follows the family as they “work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.”
Steve Blackman will take the executive producer role, with Jeremy Slater writing the pilot script. Way is set to serve as co-executive producer, Deadline explains. The series has also been confirmed for 10 episodes.
In Jan. 2018, Way posted the first photo from the set. Later that month, he shared a sketch of the table read drawn by illustrator Fabio Moon
“This was a particularly exciting day, as we got to hear the full cast read through the script,” Way wrote. “The show is coming out great— great cast, great crew, great everyone!”
In Feb. 2018, Mary J. Blige joined the cast. According to Deadline, Blige will play Cha-Cha, a “ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets. Even though she has a few gripes about the bureaucracy of her employers, this job is her life. She is sadistic, sociopathic, and her reputation precedes her. Her true love is torture, and she thinks of herself as a ‘pain artist.’ She really doesn’t care for people—except for her partner Hazel.”
In March 2018, Kate Walsh (13 Reasons Why) joined the already star-studded cast. Walsh is set to play “the Handler,” who is described as “a composed and confident leader of a mysterious, bureaucratic company who is always ready to manage any situation — though it’s best not to get on her bad side. Her charm is her greatest strength and she uses it to her advantage to complete the business of her organization.”
In July 2018, Way shared the first look at the cast in action and revealed 2019 would be when the series headed to Netflix.
In Oct. 2018, Way finally revealed the Feb. 15, 2019 premiere date. Netflix also shared some on-set photos and teaser posters of the cast.
