The patent, shown here, outlines a “Game Boy-esque casing for capacitative touchscreen devices.” Filed in March, the accompanying schematic illustrates a shell-like case that your phone would presumably fit inside. See the image, below.

And the part of the case that makes your phone a so-called “working” Nintendo Game Boy appears to be the buttons on top. These would seemingly be sensed by the touchscreen beneath, thereby “turning” your device into the 8-bit mini.

Not to mention the square window in the phone case emulating the famous handheld console’s screen. And, from the illustration included with the patent, it actually looks like a real-deal Game Boy, paired with a smartphone!

Consequently, Variety speculates the patent’s filing date points to a Christmas 2018 release. If so, it would follow Nintendo’s recent retro throwback consoles like the popular NES Classic and subsequent Super Nintendo Classic.

Meanwhile, another Nintendo device was approved by the FCC on the same day the Game Boy patent was published last month. But the approval grants 180 days of confidentiality, so we don’t yet know what that one looks like.
