Nirvana sue Marc Jacobs for ripping off classic design
Nirvana have reportedly taken legal action against fashion label Marc Jacobs for ripping off their iconic smiley face design.
According to TMZ, the band have filed a lawsuit against the fashion company for their newly launched “Bootleg Redux Grunge” collection. A t-shirt included in the new line is almost a spitting image of Nirvana’s classic band tee.

TMZ reports that Nirvana has owned the trademark for their iconic smiley face since 1992.
Black with a nearly identically drawn face on it, the Marc Jacobs shirt basically exchanges Nirvana’s dead eyed ‘X’s with an ‘M’ and a ‘J’ and calls it a day.
If that weren’t enough, the company exchanges Nirvana’s band name for the word “Heaven” in a typeface that is indistinguishable from the “Onyx” font used in the original design.
Last, the new design exchanges Nirvana’s “FLOWER SNIFFIN KITTY PETTIN BABY KISSIN CORPORATE ROCK WHORES” phrase on the back for “Redux Grunge Collection 1993/2018 Marc Jacobs.”
The lawsuit comments on this phrase, stating Nirvana as one of the founders of grunge. This suggests the “Redux Grunge Collection” title wouldn’t exist without the band. Plus, 1993 was also a peak year for Nirvana, and when classic record In Utero was released.

Marc Jacobs have yet to comment on the lawsuit.
