Oli Sykes explains the concept behind 'That's The Spirit'

Current AP cover stars Bring Me The Horizon are set to release their highly-anticipated fifth LP, That's The Spirit, tomorrow, September 11, through their new label home of Columbia Records. With several singles released thus far—along with teases of most of the remaining tracks on the album—fans should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from BMTH's most recent output; arguably a stronger, more revitalized version of the British five-piece, but one with a polarizing change in sound and direction no doubt. However, despite that sonic changeup, fans aren't likely to be too keen on That's The Spirit's conceptual identity just yet. Luckily, frontman Oli Sykes has taken to social media to explain what the release is all about. You can read through his in-depth statement below along with a video he posted to Instagram that reveals the album's CD packaging inside and out.

The shadow describes the part of the psyche that an individual would rather not acknowledge. It contains the denied parts of the self. Since the self contains these aspects, they surface in one way or another. The greatest power comes from having accepted your shadow parts & integrated them as components of your Self. Everyone carries a shadow, & the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. At all counts, it forms an unconscious snag, thwarting our most well-meant intentions. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. This album is a celebration of the darkness, because everything may seem bleak & black on the outside, but inside us all is a world of colour & emotion that we NEED to let take over & not ignore, & that's the long winded explanation for the album concept & the artwork. Let's get this album to no.1 & give a big fuck you to the rest of the world. Go out & pick up a physical copy of #thatsthespirit tomorrow

That's The Spirit can be purchased now through Bring Me The Horizon's webstore. AP 327, whose cover is graced by BMTH themselves, is also on sale now.
