Watch Palaye Royale banish “Little Bastards” with the power of rock
Late on April 9, Palaye Royale unveiled a new single and video from their highly-anticipated record The Bastards. The new track is appropriately titled “Little Bastards” and since we’re all social distancing, Palaye Royale made an accompanying animated video for the song.
The Bastards is arriving via Sumerian Records on May 29.

Fans have been clamoring for Palaye Royale’s third outing since the release of Boom Boom Room (Side B) in Sep. 2018. After that, we’ve been treated to five new songs: “Massacre, The New American Dream,” “Hang On To Yourself,” “Nervous Breakdown” and “Fucking With My Head,” and most recently “Lonely,” which all appear on The Bastards.
This most recent single “Little Bastards” is the first song of the upcoming album and Sebastian Danzig says it captures every musical theme that will appear on the album.
“‘Little Bastards’ is the opening track from our third album, The Bastards,” Danzig begins. “Musically we show the direction of the album all in a single track. The vulnerability, the truth and the aggression all wrapped together in a three and a half minute track which will set the listener up for what is to come for the next 14 tracks and what corners we will touch.
“Lyrically it trails from our latest release “Lonely” but displaying the frustration and anger towards individuals that are meant to be friends.”
“Visually we wanted to display our current state which is complete isolation from the world; trapped inside a house but yet the toxic society has found its way inside, he continued. “We have to ‘band’ together to keep our circle of trust and honesty tight.”

The road to “Little Bastards wasn’t an easy one. The coronavirus pandemic slowed the music business (and most others) to a virtual standstill. This made it impossible for Palaye Royale to create an in-person music video. So they did the next best thing, they animated it.
Bands are getting rather creative with the music video process during this quarantine with the likes of blink-182 and Neck Deep asking for fan submissions and compiling them. Machine Gun Kelly and YUNGBLUD simply filmed themselves in their bathrooms.
The video for “Little Bastards” reflects the storyboard of an upcoming album written and illustrated by Barrett and XO Billie. It’s a rollercoaster of innovative lighting and Gothic influences. Check it out below.

The Bastards draws from the gothic imaginings of the three brothers, Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig and Emerson Barrett, and takes place in a Utopian world known as Obsidian.
“It takes place around the island of Obsidian and it’s set in 1888,” Barrett says. “In short, it’s a world that started off with intentions where the island encouraged free thinkers and artists to exist and, as everything does in life, eventually it becomes this political power and evil toxicity that comes with everything. To remain a true individual in the society, you must wear a gas mask.”
To create such a fantastical concept, the band couldn’t just stay in one place. The needed fresh inspiration regarding all elements of their new work.
“We rented an AirBnB in Joshua Tree, one in London, and we kept on going in little areas and writing new sections of the album,” Danzig states. “It’s crazy — we thought the album was done in March of last year, and we did the heavy stuff in Joshua Tree. We wrote ‘Little Bastards’ a week before the album was supposed to be mixed and mastered.”

The album doesn’t just deal with fictional protagonists and issues in and around Obsidian either. Lyrically, Palaye Royale wanted to tackle problems afflicting today’s youth. Gun violence, substance abuse and mental health are all represented in The Bastards.
“We need a little honesty and a little truth,” Leith adds. “The world is getting so tainted by everyone trying to be so fucking perfect and so goddamn PG and trying to walk this line of not trying to offend anyone. People need to be themselves, just for 20 minutes at least.”
