Panic! At The Disco to write music for Spongebob Squarepants musical

According to various industry reports, Panic! At The Disco will be among an impressive group of artists to write music for an upcoming Spongebob Squarepants musical. They join the likes of David Bowie, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, the Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, the Dirty Projectors, Plain White T’s, T.I., Jonathan Coulton (who also wrote additional lyrics) and They Might Be Giants.

Nickelodeon will be debuting the theatrical production in Chicago next year. Soon thereafter, it will move to New York.

While not much of the plot or storyline is known at this time, Variety reports that Tina Landau will serve as director, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt is set to join as musical supervisor.

We’re not going to downplay the fact that Panic! are writing music for something related to Spongebob Squarepants—that in itself is awe-inspiring. Nonetheless, it’s incredibly unnecessary. Picture this: Squidward leaning out a window of his house, bellowing the chorus of “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” to a dumbfounded Spongebob and Patrick standing in his yard below. (I’m totally kidding, but just let that scene sink in.)
