Pete Wentz reflects on “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out,” gets personal about the holidays
With the holidays right around the corner, some seasonal tracks stick with us harder than others. For instance, Fall Out Boy’s “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” has become a staple among every pop-punk fan’s Christmas playlist.
In a story with Noisey, Pete Wentz went into detail on the song’s origin and its mainstay among the Fall Out Boy discography.

Originally, the song was played after the Chicago pop-punk band first headlined a show at the Metro.
While the song itself is full of angst and dramatic lines, Wentz says that time has changed his holiday outlook. Once full of hate for the suburbs, “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” is now more of a marker for Wentz’s entire career.
“Maybe that was a bit overdramatic,” Wentz says of the track. “I don’t think it was awful. I think monotonous would be a better word. I think when you are a punk rock kid in the suburbs, the holidays represent the biggest version of the monoculture. How could you not take a shot at it?”
In the interview, Wentz claimed that the holidays only emphasize the feelings you already have. For example, if you are missing your family, you miss them more when Christmas comes to town.
However, Wentz claimed his role as a father has since changed his outlook on the holidays for the better.
“Now I get to be Santa, which gives you a whole other perspective,” Wentz says. “I think trying to make sure it’s fun and you are creating traditions for your kids without going full Elf on the Shelf dad has been the mission for me.”
