‘Deadpool 2’ PG-13 re-release is coming to theaters

A Deadpool 2 re-release will be hitting theaters this winter. Known for its crude but hilarious charm, the re-release is rumored to tone down the explicit content enough to bring it down from its “R” rating to a “PG-13.”

Coming Dec. 21, everybody’s favorite inappropriate supervillain is back. Just this time, the Deadpool franchise is deciding to make it… less inappropriate?

Instead of adding another entirely new Deadpool movie, the franchise is supposedly just re-releasing Deadpool 2 as a PG-13 film, and according to Variety, Fox may have even shot new footage for the re-release.

While fans are technically uncertain on what the re-release will be about, we have a few ideas. Ryan Reynolds tweeted a photo of Deadpool in a Santa hat alongside Fred Savage appearing to reprise his role as “The Grandson” in The Princess Bride.

The studio urged press (that’s us) to “guess away.” With the help of Reynolds, a popular theory appears to be that Deadpool himself will be retelling the story of Deadpool 2 to The Princess Bride character. Just like in The Princess Bride, the grandfather brushed all of the terrifying scenes under the rug when retelling the story to his grandson. This seems like a super creative way to present all of the inappropriate content in the Deadpool 2 re-release.

The film’s re-release will be taking over Alita: A Battle Angel’s slot the weekend before Christmas. Alita: A Battle Angel’s release has been pushed back to Feb. 14. Dark Phoenix’s release will also be pushed back to June 7.

Back in 2016, YouTuber Grace Randolph created a petition, urging Ryan Reynolds and co. to put out a PG-13 version of the original Deadpool. Obviously, the petition was met with a lot of backlash and it never happened. In fact, even Reynolds himself responded to the proposition in a story with comicbook.

“I don’t think so. I mean, you saw it,” Reynolds said. “That would be a very short movie. It’s almost a commercial at that point.”

How the tables have turned.
