Prince gets Grammys tribute event with Foo Fighters, St. Vincent, more

Two days after the televised presentation of the Grammy Awards, music icon Prince will be given a glorious tribute. Rolling Stone reports that Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute To Prince will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Jan 28.

Acts confirmed to appear include Foo Fighters, St. Vincent, Beck, Usher, Gary Clark Jr., Alicia Keys, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Mavis Staples, H.E.R., Earth, Wind & Fire and Juanes. Many of Prince’s successful proteges will be on hand, as well.

Singer/percussionist Sheila E (who rocketed into fame in 1984 with the Prince-penned hit “The Glamorous Life”)  and multi-instrumentalist producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will be on hand as the evening’s musical directors. The righteous and riotous Morris Day And The Time will be strutting their stuff onstage. Super-fans take note: The Revolution, Prince’s band at the pinnacle of his success (1984’s Purple Rain) will also be participating.

“Musically, there’s so much to choose from,” she told Rolling Stone. “It’s almost unfair to do a two-hour tribute to him—we could do a full week. At the end of the day, it’s him bringing people together and having a good time.”

E’s comment regarding building community is a bottom line that truly resonates. Prince’s output has so many facets and they’ve all been significantly influential for decades. Consider the Foo Fighters taking on the salacious “Darling Nikki.” Have you heard British noise-rock footnotes Age Of Chance driving a tight AF version of “Kiss” yet? How about Mariachi El Bronx’s positively divine version of “I Would Die 4 U”? The kickass version of “Sign O’ The Times” delivered by Muse is nothing short of amazing, and Green Day have been known to do a celebratory take on “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Rolling Stone also confirmed that the event will be filmed and slated for broadcast later this year. The 2020 Grammy Awards will air Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. EST with Bring Me The Horizon, I Prevail, the 1975, Billie Eilish, Tool and more nominated. Check out a full list of nominees here.
