Brian May is finally addressing those ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ sequel rumors

In 2018, the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody was released. Starring Rami Malek, the film went on to make more than $900 million worldwide and win various awards including the Academy Award for Best Actor. Due to the success of the film, Queen‘s Brian May and Roger Taylor are often asked if a sequel to the biopic could happen in the future.

In a new interview this week, May is finally addressing those sequel rumors.

It’s no secret that there are often talks about sequels for films that perform well at the box office. So it came as no surprise to May and Taylor when they started being asked about a possible follow up to Bohemian Rhapsody.

The film greatly depicts the life of Mercury throughout his teenage years and adult life. Bohemian Rhapsody ends with the late Queen frontman learning that he has HIV in 1985 and shows his final onstage performance at Live Aid.

Back in March of 2019, it was reported that a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel was being considered and would pick up where the 2018 film left off. According to the report, Queen’s manager Jim Beach had intentions to pick up the story post-Live Aid performance and show Mercury’s final years before his death in 1991.

Following this, in June of 2019, Adam Lambert squashed these sequel rumors. In an interview with NME, the singer who tours with Queen dismissed the reports that a sequel was in the works. Lambert himself made a super brief cameo in Bohemian Rhapsody that many viewers of the film missed.

Now, in a new interview on Wednesday, May shares that a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel is still unlikely to happen.

“Don’t think we didn’t think about it,” May says. “We’ve talked. At the moment, I don’t think that would be an uplifting thing to do. I’m not saying it’s impossible because there is a great story there, but we don’t feel that’s the story we want to tell at the moment.”

There are various moments in the lives of Mercury and Queen that are not shown in the film. Much of Mercury’s childhood and Queen’s more recent years are not present. Despite this, however, Queen and the film’s producers simply don’t think there is enough to make a sequel.

“There’s a million things in our career which you couldn’t show in a movie since the movie had to be so simplified to make it watchable,” May shares. “But we don’t really think there’s another movie there. That’s the long and the short of it. I think we should look somewhere else. There are other ideas that we had, but I don’t think a sequel will happen. But we have looked at it pretty seriously.”

So for now, there are no plans for a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel to happen in the future. In the meantime, Queen have been keeping busy while in quarantine. May has been vocal about the importance of following the coronavirus restrictions that have been put into place. On March 16, he shared a lengthy statement on his Instagram about the restrictions as well as the British government’s failures during this time.

Along with this, Lambert and Queen recently gave a virtual performance of the hit “We Are The Champions” while in separate isolation. The at-home performance features subtle lyrical changes to the song that are directed towards those impacted by the coronavirus.
