Radio stations banning “Baby It’s Cold Outside” because it’s kind of creepy

Radio stations from across the United States have been deciding to ban the holiday song, “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” While this might seem a little ridiculous at first, the stations have a very good point: The song can be construed as a little creepy.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, people against the song are saying that its lyrical components are coercive and manipulative.

With that being said, the debate between keeping the song on-air and not playing it altogether has been heating up. The issue arises within the duet’s back-and-forth lyricism.

For example, the woman’s part of the song has lines such as, “Say, what’s in this drink?” and “The answer is no.” The man’s part then combats her repetitive desires to leave.

According to Stereogum, the first radio station to ban the song this year was WDOK Star102 FM in Cleveland, Ohio. After their initial protest of the song, other stations began to get on board.

Despite a taking a poll of the track and having 95% of people vote to keep the song on-air, the Cleveland station ultimately decided to cease playing it. WDOK host Desiray says that the song’s morals aren’t something appropriate for impressionable children.

“People might say, ‘oh, enough with that #MeToo,’ but if you really put that aside and listen to the lyrics, it’s not something I would want my daughter to be in that kind of a situation,” Desiray says in a story with KATV. “The tune might be catchy, but let’s maybe not promote that sort of an idea.”
