Radio stations to play "Baby, It's Cold Outside" again, despite controversy

Despite the recent controversy surrounding the once-classic Christmas song, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” Exclaim has reported that CBC Radio has decided to put the song back on the air.

The decision to reinstate the song follows public outcry of people claiming the song has an underlying lyrical message that could be viewed as manipulative, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

With this recent debate of removing the song due to its lyrical content, some radio stations have decided to go forth in playing the song on the airwaves.

The latest to do so, as Exclaim pointed out was CBC Radio, to which CBC’s head of public affairs, Chuck Thompson, recently posted a statement.

In the statement, Thompson explained the station’s decision to reinstate the song back to the airwaves, citing that audience “overwhelming” audience input caused them allow the song back on the air:

“Last week, we decided to press pause to consider the different points of view on playing ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside,'” Thompson said. “Because we value our audience input, which was overwhelmingly to include the song, we have put it back on the two playlists where it had been removed. Appreciating not everyone interprets lyrics the same way, listeners may wish to skip the song as we understand not everyone will agree with this decision.”

Prior to CBC Radio’s decision to allow the song back on the air, it was reported that WDOK Star102 FM in Cleveland, Ohio was the first station to pull the plug on the track (per a report from Stereogum.)

Granted, the decision to take the song from the air was made despite 94 percent of its viewers voting in a poll to keep the song on-air.
