Billie Eilish admired by Radiohead frontman for “doing her own thing”

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has expressed his admiration for Billie Eilish after taking his daughter to one of her shows.

He said the gig was a “fine moment” where, apparently, Sam Smith was behind him the entire show.

“We sat down and whats-his-name, the guy who did the Bond film we didn’t do? He stands behind us and I’m sitting with my daughter, her friends, and my girlfriend, when suddenly everyone goes ‘Saaaam!’ I’m, like, ‘Aaaaargh!” Yorke told The Times

After discussing the moment where Smith’s song was picked for the 2015 film Spectre instead of a track Radiohead submitted, he talked about his love for Eilish’s music.

“I like Billie Eilish. She’s doing her own thing. Nobody’s telling her what to do,” he continued.

Yorke joins the long list of celebrity fans of the 17-year-old pop star, including Dave Grohl, Avril Lavigne and many more.

Speaking of Grohl, he recently compared Eilish to Morrissey.

Grohl appeared on Queens Of The Stoneage frontman Josh Homme’s Beats 1 show to talk about the star.

He said his daughter was the one who introduced him to Eilish’s music.

“She gave me a copy of this Billie Eilish song called ‘idontwannabeyouanymore.’ And I listened to it and the song is so beautiful. It’s heavy. The lyrics are dark and it’s super heavy. Beautiful,” he said. “And I said, ‘Who is this?’ And she said, ‘Billie Eilish.’ I said, ‘What’s her deal?’ This is maybe like a year ago.

“I think she had released a bunch of songs or maybe EPs before but her LP, her album just came out not too long ago. But anyway, we went to go see her play and then we got to meet her and her family and her family’s awesome. And they took Violet in because they understood her connection with Billie’s music”

“That was the thing when we went to go see Billie Eilish at The Wiltern, you felt like you were a part of something that was about to just explode. It’s the connection she has with her audience. She’s like Morrissey. It’s like the kids who are there at the show, and not just kids, the people that are there are just so into the scene. That world.”

This is far from the first time Grohl talked about Eilish. He previously had to clarify his statement when he related certain aspects of Eilish to his former band, Nirvana

In an interview with Variety, the Foo Fighters frontman was originally misquoted. However, a later Instagram post revealed Grohl’s real intentions. In the post, Grohl talked about how his daughters are finding their footing in music through Eilish, much like many young people did with Nirvana back in the day. Additionally, Grohl says that Eilish is changing the landscape of rock music.

Now, in an interview with Radio X, Eilish was able to geek out about Grohl’s kind words.

“I can’t even believe that,” Eilish says. “Are you kidding? He said rock isn’t dead because of me. Dude, I grew up on that shit. Huh? Rock? Like, I can’t.”

“Dave is such a sweetheart and his daughters, I love them,” Eilish continues. “And he’s so good, of course they’re good, because he’s, fucking, their dad.”

Then, Eilish went on to to say that she actually listened to Foo Fighters and Nirvana (along with some other scene favorites) from a young age. However, Eilish adds that that her love for the genre never left.

“I feel like you hit your rock phase and then it doesn’t really go away,” Eilish continues.“I’m still listening to My Chem, Green Day, Nirvana and Foo Fighters.”

Originally, Grohl’s misquoted comparison of Nirvana to Eilish sent fans into a confused frenzy. However, Grohl’s simple clarification was enough to put things into perspective for skeptical fans.

“My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish,” Grohl says. “And what I’m seeing happening with my daughters is the same thing that happened to me at their age. My daughters are listening to Billie Eilish and they’re becoming themselves through her music. She totally connects to them. So we went to go see her play at the Wiltren, and that connection that she has with her audience is the same thing that was happening with Nirvana in 1991. The people in the audience know every word.”

Following that, Grohl also explains that rock music can go in a plethora of directions.

“And her music is so hard to define,” Grohl continues. “I try to describe her to people and I don’t know… I don’t even know what to call it. But it’s authentic. And I would call it rock n’ roll. So I don’t care what sort of instruments you use to do it. When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, I’m like, ‘Shit man, rock n’ roll is not even close to being dead.’”

More Billie Eilish news

Billie Eilish has made another statement about why she wears baggy clothes following a photo of her went viral and fans came to her defense.

To start from the beginning, Eilish is known for her style, particularly her choice of always wearing very bagging clothes.

She’s previously  revealed her reasoning for always donning her signature baggy clothes during her Clavin Klein campaign.

“I never want the world to know everything about me. I mean that’s why I wear big baggy clothes,” she said. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath.”

“Nobody can be like ‘Oh, she’s slim-thick, she’s not slim-thick, she’s got a flat ass, she’s got a fat ass,’” she continued. “No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”

You can see the video of her explaining her style below.

Then, she was photographed wearing a white fitted tank top under a baggy sweatshirt. The attire differed from her usual baggy clothes, sparking tweets that sexualized Eilish’s appearance.

When people began objectifying Eilish after photos surfaced of her in a fitted tank top, fans immediately came to her defense.

Now, she’s spoken up in a recent interview with Vogue Australia to further discuss her outfit choices.

“What I like about just dressing like I’m 800 sizes bigger than I am is it kind of gives nobody the opportunity to judge what your body looks like,” Eilish said. “I don’t want to give anyone the excuse of judging, and not—and it’s not like everyone’s going to judge you, but they all do in their head, like even if they’re not trying to.”

In the interview, Eilish also explained being inspired by Rihanna’s fashion.

“I remember seeing an acceptance speech Rihanna gave where she said fashion has always been her defense mechanism,” Eilish said. “And I felt like I never felt something as strongly hearing someone else say it than I did when I heard her say that because it’s always been that way for me. It’s always been my security blanket.”
