Riverdale is going to have a bit less parental guidance in the future. The CW show announced the departure of Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols following this fourth season. Ulrich played Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) father F.P. Jones and was a television regular since the second season.

Nichols plays Veronica’s (Camila Mendes) mother Hermione Lodge, and has since the debut of Riverdale back in 2017.

Riverdale is currently airing its fourth season. Archie, Veronica and the rest are all seniors in high school. It was announced earlier this year that the show would definitely be returning for a fifth season. Exactly what will happen is still unknown but they won’t be in high school anymore.

The exiting of Ulrich and Nichols at the end of this season makes sense, especially if the gang is going off to college or life beyond. Speaking with TVLine, Ulrich announced his departure and said he will miss the cast.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships I’ve made on Riverdale, and I will miss seeing everyone on a daily basis,” Ulrich said in a statement. “I’m proud to have been part of such a talented group of people, in front of the camera and behind. But I’ve decided that it’s time for me to move on to explore other creative opportunities.”

Nichols echoed the sentiment in her own statement to TVLine.

“I had an incredible time bringing Hermione Lodge to life and working with my amazing cast, who became family,” Nichols said. “We had so many wonderful times together during the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We really do have the best fans ever. I am looking forward to the next chapter and am excited about the future.”

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also confirmed the departure of Nichols and Ulrich in his own statement.

“Part of life in Riverdale — and part of growing up — is saying goodbye to people,” Aguirre-Sacasa says. “I’m grateful to Skeet and Marisol for their incredible work on the show these last four years, and we all wish them well on their future endeavors. F.P. and Hermione will never be far from our hearts. And, of course, they’re always welcome back in Riverdale.”

As stated, Riverdale is currently airing the second half of its fourth season and has been renewed for a fifth. Speaking on what could take place following graduation, Sprouse and Mendes shared their thoughts.

“[It] kinda frees up the universe a little bit inside Riverdale to play around with that concept,” Sprouse said. “I’m excited to see where we all go.”

“I don’t want the kids to be in high school forever,” Mendes agreed. “I think Riverdale is very much a show about the cycle of life, and things growing up, and all of that. So I think it’d be really cool to see them go off to college and grow up and see what they make out of their lives.”

No details have yet emerged about the fifth season of Riverdale but it is expected to hit television screens in October.
