Ruby Rose is leaving ‘Batwoman’ but it won’t be the end of the series

Ruby Rose is stepping down from her role in the Batwoman series and neither she or the show’s producers are providing a reason why.

After just one season, Rose is leaving the CW series. It’s already set for a second season and is now looking for a new leading actor.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose said in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

Sources are reportedly saying the decision is not related to a stunt injury Ruby Rose had during season one. She suffered a serious injury that could have ended in paralysis. She ended up going through emergency surgery over the incident. The actor also shared a video at the time showing graphic footage of her surgery.

According to Deadlinethe two sides of the discussion mutually agreed o parting ways. The first season ended up filming 20 of its 22 proposed episodes with the last two being cut short over the coronavirus pandemic.

Rose reportedly wasn’t enjoying the filming process for a network drama with her most extensive role like this being her nine episodes on Netflix‘s Orange Is The New Black.

“I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created,” she continues in her statement. “Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

Further, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV released a joint statement reaffirming their excitement in continuing to create Batwoman. They’re also aiming to be casting another LGBTQ actress in the lead role.

“Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the two companies said. “The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

Nevertheless, her role marks the first time a gay lead character was starring in a live-action superhero series.
