Ryan Gosling is set to bring back a classic Universal horror monster

The report details that Universal has been meeting with directors over the past month. While no one has firmly secured the role, Cory Finley is reportedly in the mix of potential choices.

The new film comes following the studio’s success with Elizabeth Moss’ The Invisible Man.

Universal didn’t comment for their story but the report says the new take on The Wolfman will be set in present times.

The film was reportedly pitched by Gosling himself and the script is written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Orange Is The New Black)

The last time we saw anything from the classic monster was in 2010’s The Wolfman, with Benicio Del Toro in the role. The studio originally planned an interconnected series of films from their back catalogue of iconic horror monsters but that’s changed. After Tom Cruise‘s The Mummy didn’t pan out as hoped, they opted for filmmaker-driven projects. They loosened restrictions on their characters and now allow for directors to create their own takes on their stories.

Further to Gosling’s The Wolfman, James Wan, Paul Feig and John Krasinski have also reportedly given pitches for classic monster films. Each of those are in different steps of development with many sitting as pitches for now.

They clearly have room for success though. The Invisible Man only cost $7 million to make but brought in $122 million at the box office.

Production timing and a release date are completely unknown given the current status of film productions being unable to operate. When things do boot back up though, Gosling will be filming an untitled astronaut film so The Wolfman is still a ways off.
