Yes, Matthew Lillard is still mad he wasn’t cast in the new ‘Scooby-Doo’ film

On May 15, the new animated Scooby-Doo film SCOOB! was released. The film’s announcement last year caused a lot of controversy after it was revealed that Matthew Lillard would not be reprising his role as Shaggy.

Following the film’s release last week, Lillard is speaking out again about not being cast in the new Scooby-Doo film.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, SCOOB! went straight to on-demand as many cinemas around the world remain closed. The new animated film in the Scooby-Doo franchise is star-studded with actors including Zac Efron, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried and many more.

Alongside these actors, Frank Welker reprised his role as the voice of Scooby-Doo. However, Will Forte was cast as the voice of Shaggy in SCOOB! much to the disappointment of many diehard fans of the franchise.

After the announcement of the film’s cast back in March of 2019, Lillard quickly took to social media to share his frustrations about the role of Shaggy going to someone else.

“Well this sucks,” Lillard says. “What a crappy way to find out….thanks Hollywood. You never sense [cease] to amaze me.”

Following the news, Lillard received an outpouring of support from his fans who were also disappointed to hear he would not be part of the animated film.

Lillard played Shaggy in both the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo as well as its 2004 sequel. He also continued to be the voice of Shaggy years following these films where he starred alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Linda Cardellini.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lillard expresses that he is upset he did not get to play Shaggy in the franchise’s new film. Despite this, he remains positive and wishes the best for everyone that was involved in the SCOOB! project.

“Yeah, about SCOOB! I don’t have a lot of good things to say,” Lillard says. “I wish them all well. Yeah, I mean, it was a drag. And I was surprised that [the recasting] happened. Hollywood’s an interesting place and I’ve been around for a long time. Some of them are easier to accept than others when you don’t get a job, but that one, that was a bummer. I like sort of having a legacy in a career that’s been 30 years doing it. I like the fact that I was that part, and it’s a bummer that it went a different way.”

Upon its release last week, Lillard took to Twitter to share what he hopes SCOOB! will bring viewers during this difficult time.

“Dear SCOOB,” Lillard tweets. “I hope you’re everything the world needs in this time of crisis. Have a great opening. #zoinks.”

Despite his Scooby-Doo setbacks, Lillard confirmed recently that he is willing and ready to reprise his role as Stu Macher in Scream 5. According to Digital Spy, the classic Scream movies once directed by the late Wes Craven will now be taken over by Ready or Not‘s Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
