See how this ‘Dexter’ star hilariously addressed returning for the reboot

In case you haven’t heard, Dexter is officially returning to television for a limited series on Showtime.

Following the news last week, Julie Benz, who played Rita Morgan, received plenty of comments from fans about the revival. However, she’s reminding everyone why the character won’t appear in the new series while also giving a nod to her Buffy The Vampire Slayer role.

Benz played Rita Morgan on Dexter from 2006 until 2010. However, before her role on the Showtime series, she was Darla on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spinoff series Angel. Following the news of the Dexter revival, Benz received a flood of comments regarding the fate of her character.

Now, the actress is sharing the only way Rita Morgan could make a return for the revival. For those who don’t remember (spoiler alert), Rita Morgan was killed off in season 4 by the Trinity Killer. Her death truly marked a controversial moment in the series and outraged many fans.

Due to the fact that the character is dead, it is already unlikely Rita will appear in the Dexter revival. However, Benz took to TikTok to share the only way her character would be able to return. She refers to Buffy in the video and says that Dexter would have to be a vampire slayer in order for her to make a comeback.

“Last I checked, Dexter was a serial killer and not a vampire slayer.”

The new Dexter revival is a direct continuation of where the original series left off. Showtime has ordered 10 new episodes that will reunite Michael C. Hall with showrunner Clyde Phillips.

“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine says. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.”

Deadline reports that production is set to begin in early 2021 with a tentative premiere date of fall 2021. Currently, it is unknown if any other original writers and cast members are returning for the new series.

Dexter aired on Showtime from 2006 until 2013 and earned various awards throughout its run. Hall, who plays the blood-splatter expert by day and killer by night, earned five Emmy nominations for Dexter. As well, he took home Golden Globe and SAG awards for the role in 2010.
