Sex Pistols biopic “not endorsed” by band, Johnny Rotten says

Never mind a biopic, the Sex Pistols don’t endorse one, after all.

It turns out that the recently-announced Sex Pistols biopic in the works isn’t actually endorsed by vocalist Johnny Rotten, nor the Sex Pistols.

Rotten, whose real last name is Lydon, took to Twitter with a message that’s pretty clear-cut about his opinion and the band’s view of upcoming film.

“You may have seen recent reports of a Sex Pistols biopic. For the avoidance of doubt this film would be unauthorised, unofficial, and not endorsed by Sex Pistols,” he wrote.

The Sex Pistols film comes after the staggering success of similar rock biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody, The Dirt, and the upcoming Rocketman. These films have proven thus far that there’s absolutely a market for storytelling when it comes to rock legends, but for some reason Lydon and company don’t seem to want to be involved, at least in this case.

The biopic, which is still soldiering on despite Lydon’s apparent wishes to ensure fans know neither he nor the band support it, will focus on the band’s manager Malcolm McLaren as well as fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who heavily incorporated punk themes into her work back during the 1970s. The movie will also follow the band’s rise to fame and rather tumultuous career.

Development on the film has been going on for about 18 months now with UK-based production company Starlight Films. It hasn’t begun shooting just yet, but it’s about to enter the casting stages. Right now, it looks like the movie will still be releasing, so we still have that to look forward to, but as far as any official involvement from the band, we’ll have to lay those dreams to rest.

Here’s to hoping Lydon finds the film agreeable when it debuts.
