This is a big milestone year for Silverstein. The Ontario-based melodic, post-hardcore legends are celebrating 20 years of being a band. They’ve maintained rockstar status while being fully active and cranking out no-skip records. A Beautiful Place To Drown will be their ninth studio album.

Today, Silverstein shared their blistering opener “Bad Habits.” The music video and track lend way to a trippy synth-pop club vibe, however that idea is quickly dispatched with Shane Told’s signature melodic growl and Aaron Marshall’s biting guitar solo. Silverstein guitarist Paul Marc Rousseau spoke about “Bad Habits,” and the new record as a whole.

“This record largely deals with the feeling of defeat that can come from trying to overcome your demons, but ‘Bad Habits’ turns that upside down,” Rousseau says.” It’s resigned rather than aspirational. ‘Bad Habits’ is a banger that takes place in that sliver of daylight between recognition and regret. After action, but before reaction. For these three minutes, we’re embracing the devil on our collective shoulder.”

Told adds on to the energy behind the song saying, “When we finished putting together ‘Bad Habits’ I knew it was going to be a fan favourite.  This song is action packed and just plain fun. It’s a rush of adrenaline and then Aaron from Intervals comes in shredding and just puts it over the top.”

“Bad Habits” Lyrics

I keep chasing bad feelings
I keep breaking down and never deal with it
Drunk, as I don’t wanna swim
I’m good with bad habits

I know this is how I get
I take a small thing and get obsessed
But I don’t care what anyone says
It’s just me and my demons left

I believe in all my doubts
I could be good, but I need to come down
But I’m back at my bullshit now
I run back to a burning house

Why pay for my mistakes
I get them for free

Why do I keep chasing bad feelings
I keep breaking down and never deal with it
Drunk, as I don’t wanna swim
I’m good with bad habits

Left home, fist full of stones
Unpacked in a new class condo
Cut my teeth, biting my own tongue
Left no short song unsung

Took a chance on a melody
Laid down where the train should be
Rescued by a hand in the ocean
Now I’m alive in the wind’s reflection

Why pay for my mistakes
I get them for free

Why do I keep chasing bad feelings
I keep breaking down and never deal with it
Drunk, as I don’t wanna swim
I’m good with bad habits

Slow down
The broken record’s still spinning
Drop fourty five to thirty three, I’m sinking
Lower lower lower, I’m sinking
Lower lower lower

I keep chasing bad feelings
I keep breaking down and never wanted to quit
‘Cause I’m good with it

Why do I keep chasing bad feelings
I keep breaking down and never deal with it
Drunk, as I don’t wanna swim
I’m good with bad habits
