It seems that Sir Ian McKellen is interested in reprising his role as Gandalf the wizard in Amazon's forthcoming Lord Of The Rings television adaptation.

During an interview on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 program, McKellen was questioned about the possible new actor to be playing his long standing character, Gandalf the wizard.

“Amazon are doing a TV series of Lord of the Rings,” Norton stated. “Now isn’t that annoying? That there’s going to be another Gandalf in town?”

“What do you mean, another Gandalf?” responded McKellen. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked, but are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7,000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Looks like we might not have to get used to another actor playing everyone's favorite wizard after all.

As previously reported, Lord Of The Rings has been in talks for a television adaptation. Amazon has now confirmed that they will be going forward with the program, which has been given a multi-season commitment.

The adaptation will be set in Middle Earth and will “explore new storylines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring,Variety reports. “The deal also includes a potential additional spin-off series.”

“The Lord Of The Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” says Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series at Amazon Studios.

“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking the Lord Of The Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”
