The Smashing Pumpkins embrace their creepy side in new "Solara" video

Remember, back in 1998, when you first realized the Smashing Pumpkins were kinda goth? Well, the Adore days are long gone. But the Pumpkins’ eerie new music video for recent comeback single “Solara” is keeping the castle-core vibe strong.

Horror movie nods and frontman Billy Corgan‘s ever-impressive “space vampire” get-ups guide the gothic delight of a new vid, premiered Thursday by Billboard. Original SP members Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha are along for the ride.

Directed by Nick Koenig, the “Solara” video features Corgan “held captive in a bizarre asylum where he receives dosages of trauma from an IV. And watches other inmates play the game Connect Four with solely black pieces,” per Billboard.

Not to mention, the creepy callbacks to classic horror flicks Friday The 13th and The Shining keep things spine-tingling throughout the surprisingly powerful anthem from the Pumpkins. Hey, I’m nothing but a body in my mind, man.

Bonus points if you catch the reference to Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) in the beret-wearing, clown-faced gunmen. They appear at around the video’s two-minute mark.
