Sony finally addresses if ‘Spider-Man 3’ will have three Peter Parkers

Earlier this month, rumors began to swirl that Tom Holland may not be the only Peter Parker returning for Spider-Man 3.

According to various reports, both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are in talks to reprise their roles as Spider-Man. Now, Sony is finally addressing those casting rumors ahead of a first look at the film reportedly arriving later this year.

Spider-Man 3 is already shaping up to be quite the movie. Benedict Cumberbatch is reprising his Doctor Strange role for the new Marvel film. He is stepping in as Peter Parker’s mentor following the tragic death of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. As well, leaks confirmed that Jamie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is also making an appearance in the new film.

With Foxx’s role confirmed, rumors emerged that other characters from past Spider-Man films could be making a return in Spider-Man 3. Then, earlier this month, various reports said that Garfield and Maguire are slated to reprise their Peter Parker roles for the Marvel Phase 4 film.

One source reported that all three Spider-Mans will join together to beat all of the hero’s foes from throughout the years in Spider-Man 3. This would make sense seeing as Electro is set to make an appearance in the new film.

However, Sony is now commenting on the casting rumors that have sent fans into a frenzy. According to ET Canada, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet.

“Those rumored castings are not confirmed,” a representative for Sony says.

The brief and cryptic statement can be interpreted a lot of different ways. Although Garfield and Maguire’s roles are not confirmed yet, this could mean that the actors are still in talks with Sony and Marvel.

As well, Sony could be trying to keep details about Spider-Man 3 under lock and key. Naturally, the studio wasn’t too happy when news about Foxx’s casting as Electro was leaked online. The MCU is built on surprises and well-kept secrets so Sony could be trying to keep things under wraps until the film’s premiere.

Now, according to ScreenRant, despite casting rumors still swirling, it looks like we could be seeing the first look at Spider-Man 3 in December.

Over the weekend, ExpoCine held its annual Latin America-based event virtually. Warner Bros., Disney, Universal, Netflix and Sony all appeared at the convention.

At the event, Camila Pacheco, who is the Executive Marketing Director of Sony Pictures Entertainment in Brazil, revealed that the film has already started production. Additionally, fans can expect a first look to arrive in December of this year, a full year ahead of the film’s planned premiere.

Nevertheless, it may be a while before fans even get the chance to see Spider-Man 3 in full. Marvel Phase 4 is set to begin with Black Widow. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Marvel Studios has faced various delays.

Black Widow was already supposed to have hit theaters in May. Now, following one postponement to November, the film starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh is slated to arrive on May 7, 2021. As well, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is also severely delayed. The series was set to arrive on Disney+ in August. However, filming for the show just resumed this fall.

While Sony and Marvel keep their secrets under watchful eyes until Spider-Man 3’s release on Dec. 17, 2021, fans are truly hoping that Garfield and Maguire make an appearance.
