Spider-Man MCU future in trouble as Disney, Sony fail to reach agreement

Disney, who owns Marvel, has apparently cut ties with Sony, who owns the rights to Spider-Man, meaning that the hero will not appear in future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kevin Feige will no longer produce future spidey films due to the inability of the companies to “reach new terms that would have given (Sony) a co-financing stake going forward, Deadline reports.

The last two films Feige produced with Spider-Man, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, both broke records.

According to Deadline, there are two more Spider-Man films in the works directed by Jon Watts and again starring Tom Holland. However, Feige won’t be the lead creative producer.

Deadline goes on to discuss the entire thing coming down to money.

Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe,” the report states. “Sony turned that offer down flat, and I don’t believe they even came back to the table to figure out a compromise.”

The news was shocking to fans, who seem to love the latest Spider-Man films within the MCU.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, the latest film to feature the character, just became Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. Without the MCU tie, it’s unclear how the future films will play out. It is also possible that Disney and Sony could return to negotiations, but nothing is for sure.

More Spider-Man news

Everyone has been absolutely loving Tom Holland‘s version of Spider-Man, and apparently so much so he’s setting records for the superhero.

The latest Spidey film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, is the first Spider-Man movie to make over a billion dollars.

Not only is the new flick the highest-grossing Spider-Man film, but it’s also the 40th movie to gross over $1 billion at the box office.

If the movie continues to soar, it will soon pass The Dark Knight, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Zootopia, Alice in Wonderland, and The Phantom Menace in that order.
