Spider-Man to return to MCU after Disney, Sony reach agreement

The unthinkable has happened — Spider-Man will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after it left when Sony and Disney couldn’t reach a deal

This news is a miracle, considering many folks involved said there was no chance it would happen.

To backtrack, we learned Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would no longer produce future spidey films due to the inability of the companies to “reach new terms that would have given (Sony) a co-financing stake going forward.”

The last two films Feige produced with Spider-Man, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, both broke records.

There are two more Spider-Man films in the works directed by Jon Watts and again starring Tom Holland.

Sony later released a statement saying they were disappointed about the decision but understand it.

Then, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra told Variety that for the time being, no deal will be made to keep Spider-Man around the MCU.

“For the moment the door is closed,” Vinciquerra says before clarifying there is “no ill will” between Sony and Marvel and hinting there could be a possible resolution in the future.

“We had a great run with [Feige] on Spider-Man movies,” Vinciquerra said.

“We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out… the Marvel people are terrific people. We have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”

However, somehow, it’s all changed. On Friday, the companies announced that Marvel and Feige would produce the third film in the Spider-Man: homecoming series that will come out in 2021.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in a statement. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

The companies were negotiating until late Thursday evening. In exchange for Feige’s work on the films, Marvel and Disney will receive about 25 percent of the profits from the upcoming film. Also, Spider-Man will appear in a future Marvel film, Variety reports.

The next Spider-Man film will drop on July 16, 2021 starring Holland.
