'Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run' trailer gives first look at new faces

The trailer that was released today for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run gives insight on how two of the show’s characters met, a new (yet familiar) face and the heartache of a lost pet.

The animated series lead to one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in TV history. The Nickelodeon series captured our hearts two decades ago, and now we’re finally seeing how SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary came into his life at a young age.

The trailer shows the duo’s introduction at Camp Coral. A young SpongeBob spots Gary’s beady eyes, before offering the snail a snack. Gary gladly accepts the gift, before climbing his way on top of the talking sponge’s head.

He asked Gary to be friends. The snail replied with a burp that lead to neon pink vomit spreading across the top of Spongebob’s head. This delightful memory is stopped short when it cuts back to current time and a missing Gary.

Patrick, Sandy and a new character that is literally Keanu Reeves’ face inside of a tumbleweed join SpongeBob on his frantic search for his beloved pet that takes Spongebob on an epic adventure all over, including the Lost City of Atlantic City.

“I’m made out of sage and I am a Sage,” Reeves said, introducing himself to Patrick before one of his eyes glistened.

The movie is written and directed by Tim Hall and will mark the first-ever all CGI Spongebob Squarepants feature. It’s currently set to release Memorial Day Weekend.

This is the third adaption of the Nickelodeon series for film. The first one titled the  SpongeBob Squarepants Movie was released in 2004. The second movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, dropped in 2015 as a live-action 3D animated film.
