‘SpongeBob’ musical gets Nickelodeon debut for series' 20th anniversary
SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in history. The musical adaptation of the same name will be debuting on Nickelodeon for a live-TV special, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the show.
The SpongeBob SquarePants musical was previously on Broadway and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! will debut on Nickelodeon in December and will be filmed in front of a live theater audience.
“Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world.” The show’s synopsis reads. “Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.”
The show brings back many of the original Broadway main cast members including Spongebob himself—Ethan Slater. Danny Skinner returns as Patrick and Gavin Lee reprises his role of Squidward.
Perhaps the greatest thing about this production was its score, which many talented artists contributed to. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! at the Disco, the Flaming Lips, Plain White T’s and John Legend are only a handful of contributors. Many of us have at least seen one episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, be it in our childhood or while witnessing another. The show means a lot to a lot of different people.
“I’m so thrilled to be able to revisit the show in a new light and with our original cast members,” director Tina Landau says in a statement. “The whole creative and I are excited to go back into the world of Bikini Bottom and discover its new life in TV broadcast form. But above all, I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share the joy and spirit of our show with a wider audience. That’s what matters most to me — the joy.”
We know you love Spongebob, no matter how tough or old you might be. With the show happening during the 20-year anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, this is sure to be a wonderfully nostalgic experience for both kids and grownups. We’re already starting to shout “I’M READY!”
