SpongeBob Squarepants-inspired Nike collab is on the way

Continuing the trend of strange but awesome shoe collaborationsNike may be releasing a crossover with a beloved cartoon character under the sea, Spongebob Squarepants.

While rumors of the collab were revealed in February by the shoe model’s namesake, Boston Celtics Point Guard Kyrie Irving, this is the first look fans have gotten of the crossover.

The upcoming Kyrie 5 colorway features a yellow base with sponge-holes decorated throughout. The sole features a red, white and brown scheme that mimics the colors of Spongebob’s iconic outfit.

The shoe even sports a subtle Nickelodeon logo on the tongue, as well as a wavy, sponge style Nike swoosh.

Irving expressed his desire to create shoe models inspired by his favorite shows to Complex in February. He also revealed that a Patrick inspired color could be on the way, as well as a Family Guy version.

The first photos of the shoe were shared by Instagram user @leo_zd_37 early this morning, giving fans a look at the first of many supposed cartoon collabs.

Irving hasn’t been afraid to show off his favorite shows through his signature shoe, already releasing a Friends-themed sneaker.

The point guard is also known for spouting Spongebob quotes in the locker room, meaning he may be as big of a fan as the rest of us.

Perhaps the shoe will come out in accordance with one of the rumored Spongebob spinoffs currently in the works.

The series has been a Nickelodeon classic since 1999, thus being able to pull in a large generation of fans.

“That’s our Marvel Universe,” Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins tells Variety. “You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years.”

Robbins pledged that the network would still continue to make our favorite yellow sponge. They’re simply looking to expand on the idea.

As far as spinoff options go, Robbins states they may be looking to “tell an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or maybe tell a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story, or can Plankton have his own? I think the fans are clamoring for it.”
