'SpongeBob SquarePants' Super Bowl petition hits 1 million

One determined SpongeBob SquarePants viewer really wants the NFL to honor the show’s late creator, Stephen Hillenburg, at the upcoming Super Bowl LIII. And that fan now has over a million signatures to back up his sweet Super Bowl request with a change.org petition to have SpongeBob‘s “Sweet Victory” performed during the game.

Indeed, as reported by Complex, a SquarePants lover by the name of Isreal Colunga launched the petition just days after Hillenburg died last month, aged 57, following a battle with neurodegenerative disease ALS. To honor the SpongeBob mastermind’s talents, Colunga wants the league to play the rock ballad from the show’s “Band Geeks” episode.

“As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently,” the petition’s outline reads. “As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show.”

As of Thursday morning, more than 1 million people have signed the petition, which indicates a final goal of 1.5 million names. The upcoming Super Bowl—where Cardi B won’t be performing—takes place Feb. 3, 2019, at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It will be aired live by CBS. At any rate, however, the NFL isn’t required to observe fan requests.
