Spotify pauses 2020 political ads over inability to “validate and review”

Spotify is announcing they will not be allowing political ads on their platform starting early next year over the issue of verifying an ad is not misleading.

The streaming service says they will suspend political ads since they cannot “validate and review” these ads accurately.

The company released a statement today (December 27) regarding their decision.

“Beginning in early 2020, Spotify will pause the selling of political advertising,” a company representative says in a statement to Variety. “This will include political advertising content in our ad-supported tier and in Spotify original and exclusive podcasts. At this point in time, we do not yet have the necessary level of robustness in our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content. We will reassess this decision as we continue to evolve our capabilities.”

As the 2020 U.S. election comes closer and closer, a lot of attention has been on how social platforms will handle political advertising next year.

Facebook has made it clear they are continuing to run ads from anyone no matter if the content is misleading or false. They have also faced criticism for this decision as other sites are going a similar route as Spotify.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey says they will not be allowing political advertising on the social media platform from November 22 onwards.

Meanwhile, Google has also stopped allowing microtargeting of political ads. This extends into their family of sites including YouTube.
