Spotify announced in March 2016 that they had hit 30 million paid subscribers. That means, in six months, Spotify gained 10 million more paid subscribers.

Apple announced during its iPhone 7 event last week that Apple Music reached 17 million subscribers, meaning it only increased by 4 million since a report from April.

In other words, according to these new statistics, Spotify is not only leaps ahead of Apple Music in paid subscribers, but it's growing at a faster rate as well.

In his tweet, Ek said “40 is the new 30. Million.” A Spotify spokesperson confirmed to Forbes and 9To5Mac that the 40 million is indeed 40 million paid subscribers.
