Stan Lee's 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse' came was changed after his death

The newest addition to the Marvel universe, Spider-man: Into The Spider-Verse, recently hit theaters, and following its debut to the big screen, fans couldn’t help but talk about the cameo of Stan Lee that had us all in tears.

The heartwarming cameo, which we’ll get to a little later, made the film way more sentimental for Marvel fans, but it appears that it wasn’t what the creators of the film originally intended.

Now, before we continue, we’d like to note there will be spoilers for Spider-man: Into The Spider-Verse below, so please don’t read further than the “read more” if you don’t want the film spoiled!

For those who aren’t familiar with the latest installment, it follows the story of Miles Morales, who becomes the new Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker.

Before the story really gets started, the newest Spider-Man meets Stan Lee, who is the costume shop owner that sells him a cheap Spider-Man costume. As Morales steps up to the counter with his new and improved suit, Lee tells him, “I’m going to miss that guy. We were friends, you know.”

Yeah…it’s a tough moment and we were definitely feeling it.

The moment was a difficult pill to swallow, especially since the film was released so soon after the death of Lee. While it was tough seeing a cameo of the late creator of the beloved superhero franchise, the little moment in the film was perfect…but apparently, it almost didn’t play out that way.

According to a new report from CinemaBlend, the movie’s co-writer Rodney Rothman revealed that the lines that were delivered in the film weren’t the only ones that got recorded.

“The thing that was interesting for us is that it evolved. We recorded it a year ago and it was not that long after his wife [Joan] had passed away,” Rothman said. “We had versions that tried a little harder to be funnier and tried a little harder to be harder. What ended up in the movie were the lines that had the most meaning to him.”

Knowing that the lines in the film held the most meaning to Lee does make the cameo even more heartwarming than before, and we’re so glad that it was something that was featured in the latest flick.

The film’s producer Chris Miller, who recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly, shared that it was important for the creative team behind the film to honor Lee’s legacy, who died back in November.

“In the beginning, we wanted to give him a real place in the movie and not just a moment — something that was exciting and could honor his legacy and also be funny at the same time. Obviously it took on a whole added poignancy after his passing, but the spirit of it remains exactly the same.”
