In a recent interview, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson states that Rey's parentage may be further discussed in the forthcoming Episode 9 film.

Kylo Ren revealed 'the truth' about Rey's parents in the most recent Star Wars installment after telepathically connecting to her through The Force. Speculation has remained open after the reveal, due to Ren's effort to persuade her to join the dark side rather than the rebels. Plus he was simply telling her what she thought she knew all along: that her parents were “nobodies.”

Speaking to The Huffington Post, Johnson explains that the reveal of Rey's parents was “the most difficult thing dramatically for Rey in this movie to hear.”

“What’s going to make life hardest on her? It would be the big ‘I am your father’ twist [from The Empire Strikes Back],” Johnson states. He explains that Luke (Mark Hamill) learning Darth Vader is his father is “the hardest thing the character could possibly hear in that moment.”

“The easy thing would be, ‘Yes, your parents are so and so and here’s your place in the world. There you go.’ The hardest thing she could hear would be: ‘No, you’re not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You’re going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet.'”

Though this reveal worked towards the greater good and character development in The Last Jedi, Johnson's not ruling out the fact that the topic may be brought up once again in Episode 9, the final film of the trilogy.

Episode 9 will be headed by The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, who is also writing the script with Oscar-winning Argo screenwriter, Chris Terrio.

“Anything’s still open,” Johnson says, “and I’m not writing the next film. [Abrams and Terrio] are doing it.”

“With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense.”

Maybe Rey’s parents were just junk traders, or maybe they could be something more. Hopefully we get to find out in the yet-untitled Episode 9, which will be released December 20, 2019.
