The short story was first adapted for TV in 1997 with The Outer Limits. The story served as the basis for an episode of the series starring Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas).

According to the report, the new adaptation is being written by Maisie Culver (Last Man Standing), Katie Lovejoy (Dead Inside) and Warner Bros. TV. Lovejoy will executive produce. Culver will co-executive produce. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.

The short story goes that after accidentally shooting herself in the brain with a nail gun, a Pollyanna-ish Becca Paulson is recruited by an over-it Jesus to be his “chosen one” in stopping the apocalypse. In order to save the world, Becca will have to prove that our deeply backward planet Earth is redeemable. She starts with her quirky midwestern hometown.

At this time, no official casting or release information for the new adaptation has been shared.

Many of King’s works have been adapted for television over the years. In fact, multiple King adaptations are current in the works. CBS is adapting a limited series based on The Stand. Apple has also ordered a series based on King’s novel Lisey’s Story.

Adrien Brody is reportedly starring in an Epix series based on the short story Jerusalem’s Lot. More recently, the second season for Hulu‘s Castle Rock aired. The series incorporates various elements of King’s works.
