‘Midnight Sun’ is finally letting us see ‘Twilight’ from Edward’s POV

Nearly 12 years after the conclusion of the Twilight saga with Breaking Dawn, author Stephenie Meyer has finally given the highly anticipated followup, Midnight Sun, an official release date.

Last week it was rumored that Meyer would be announcing the book after she posted a countdown on her website. The website crashed after the countdown completed but Meyer appeared on Good Morning America to reveal the news.

The history of Midnight Sun is long and fraught with heartbreak for Twilight fans, or Twihards. Initially, a few chapters of the book were leaked online in 2008. In response, Meyer publicly posted 12 chapters for fans and said in a blog post that Midnight Sun would likely remain incomplete. However, in a 2015 interview, the author revealed that she had begun working on the Breaking Dawn follow up again.

Midnight Sun is a prequel of sorts to the Twilight saga, telling the story of Edward Cullen‘s perspective as opposed to Bella Swan‘s. Readers get to learn Cullen’s past and his experiences as a vampire. Read the official description below.

This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting beautiful, mysterious Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his long life as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?

In Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer transports us back to a world that has captivated millions of readers and, drawing on the classic myth of Hades and Persephone, brings us an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love.

When Meyer uploaded the countdown clock on her website, fans speculated it could mean a number of things. But, we think it’s safe to say that most hoped it was for Midnight Sun. We all got what we were hoping for.

Today (May 4) Stephenie Meyer took to Good Morning America to announce the book will be releasing this August.

“My name is Stephenie Meyer and I am very excited to finally, finally announce the release of ‘Midnight Sun’ on Aug 4,” Meyer says. “It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure if it was the right time to put this book out but some of you had been waiting for just so, so long It didn’t seem fair to me to make you wait anymore.”

“I hope this book gives my readers a little pleasure to anticipate and, if it arrives, a chance to live in an imaginary world for a while,” Meyer says. “I can’t express how much I appreciate the patience of my readers, and their support over the years it took to finish ‘Midnight Sun.’”

As expected, fans are through the roof excited about the news. Check out some reactions below.
