Stranger Things star David Harbour isn’t too positive that the original release date of the fourth season will come to fruition. In fact, Harbour thinks the release will be pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic has stopped the world in its tracks. Most things been canceled from festivals and tours, to sporting events and television production. Unfortunately, Stranger Things was not immune.
Stranger Things season three rocked our world when it premiered back in October and the twists and turns left many wondering about the fate of the fan-favorite Jim Hopper, played by David Harbour.
Thankfully, we got some good news last month when the first trailer for the fourth season was revealed. It took us to the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where Hopper is working in a Russian prison camp.
Officially speaking with TVLine, the Duffer Brothers spoke about what is in store for our beloved characters.
“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway — and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper!” the Duffer Brothers said. “Although it’s not all good news for our ‘American’; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human… and other.”
“Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything. Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime, pray for the American.”
While all of that sounds exhilarating, especially the “biggest and most frightening season yet” part, given the state of the world right now, we’ll probably have to wait a bit longer for the show.
In a recent Q&A on his Instagram, David Harbour revealed that the original air date of Stranger Things season four was to be early 2021. Now, however, he thinks it will be pushed back when asked for more details.
“Who knows? We’re shut down now,” Harbour said. “It was supposed to come out early next year I think. Although, I don’t have authority on this. And now I don’t know. That’ll probably be pushed back. Hopefully, we can get back to work but I don’t know what that looks like.”
If you haven’t yet seen the new trailer, watch it below.
One interesting detail appears very briefly. Games Of Thrones actor Tom Wlaschiha or Jaqen H’ghar appears around the 0:27 mark.
Many Redditors have posted theories regarding the release date, with a rather savvy fan speculating we’ll have the fourth season on Apr. 03, 2020. They came to this conclusion by analyzing quite a few clues. In the behind-the-scenes set tour of season three there is a drawing of a prisoner with the number 403-X on his uniform. 403 is also the number of the hospital room where Nancy visited Mrs. Driscoll.
We now know that the April 2020 is out of the question but April 2021 could certainly be the case. Harbour said it was scheduled for early 2021, which could have been April originally, but, if Stranger Things is postponed now, it might be even later.

Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that we learn the fate of Hawkins and Hopper as soon as possible. Most speculation assumed we wouldn’t be getting the next season of Stranger Things until 2021 anyway. Hey, at least we know that the first episode is titled “Chapter One: The Hellfire Club”.
