For those out of the loop, Stranger Things season three rocked our world when it premiered back in October. The ending left viewers unsure about the fate of Hopper’s character. But, that was cleared up when the first trailer for the fourth season was revealed. It took us to the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where Hopper is working in a Russian prison camp.

The upcoming season of Stranger Things is sure to be a wild ride.

Officially speaking with TVLinethe Duffer Brothers spoke about what is in store for our beloved characters.

“Although it’s not all good news for our ‘American’; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human… and other.”

“Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything. Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet. And we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime, pray for the American.”

There have been numerous fan theories about the contents and release date of Stranger Things’ fourth season, which was allegedly set to release in early 2021. However, back in March, Harbour said he thinks it’s most likely to be pushed back given the state of the world right now.

But, also back in March, Harbour teased a major reveal about some backstory for his character.

According to IndieWire, Harbour spoke at Liverpool Comic-Con back in March and referenced a specific episode from Stranger Things’ second season where Eleven goes to the basement of the cabin and finds five boxes. Harbour says the significance of those boxes is to be revealed in the upcoming season.

“In season two, Eleven goes into the basement of the cabin and there’s five boxes, one of which has Brenner’s stuff from Hawkins Lab, one of which says ‘Dad,’ one of which says ‘Vietnam.’ One says “New York.” So there are these three things that we’ve established in the season that if we don’t pay off, it means that they’re bad writers. And the Duffer Brothers are very good writers,” Harbour says.

“So I know specifically that in Season 4 we will give you a big, huge reveal about Hopper’s backstory.”

“I’m so excited about revealing this aspect of the character,” Harbour added. “It’s one of the things that I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t expressed it yet. And finally we’re gonna express it in a big way. It’s my favorite thing about him that you guys don’t know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and dad. And I’m really excited for you guys to know more about that, and it relates, of course, to things he’s doing with Eleven and Joyce and things like that.”
