XX (Sew My Eyes)

This song is about the idea of wanting to move on from a moment, person or cycle in life, but feeling like your actions that leave you unexplainably content in discomfort make up who you are, and battling that in your head.

I Think It's Best We Don't Talk Anymore

This song is about knowing someone is probably better off without you, but not being able to walk away from it yourself. I really like the aggressive energy this song carries without having to have a defined “heavy part”. I pushed myself really hard on this song and it was the first song that I ever recorded that had more singing than screaming in it, which was a very very new & exciting feeling for me and the rest of the band as well.

Tear Me Apart

I wrote this song about the things I was feeling the week I moved out of my dad’s house, for the final time in March 2013, and I moved in with Ryan [Knowles, Capsize guitarist] to try and really pursue the band. At that time, I was told some really hurtful things by my dad and felt really doubted by someone who was supposed to be my main support system. My dad was going through his own things that gave our living situation an overall negative vibe towards the end of it, which made leaving that much more intense. Me and my father are in a much better place now, and I love him for playing the main role in how I am able to handle myself on my own now. I‘m now fully moved on from being upset about the way that transition happened, which made this song a point of closure on my feelings about it. Even though that specific instance inspired this lyrical theme, this song truly goes out to anyone that has ever felt doubted or discouraged by their family or closest friends while trying to pursue something that means everything to them.

Favorite Secret

This song was made for anyone that’s been in a relationship that had to be kept a secret to protect someone’s comfortable situation. If you’ve ever fallen for a person who was already in another relationship that ended for you because you were not the easy, safe choice, maybe got involved with a co-worker, or had to be hidden from your partner's judgmental family, whatever it may be, you’ll understand.

One Day I Won't Be So Easy to Forget

This one’s about feeling guilty for the fact that being this passionate and driven towards the success of the band has ruined things that could have worked out, had I just been around. No matter how abandoned or angry the people involved may feel today, I can assure you the weight it still holds on me is just as heavy. Things don’t work for a reason though, and I think I can see what was meant to be clearly now.

Safe Place

These lyrics go into the feeling that I can’t open up to many people because of my fear that there is a secret agenda behind anyone’s kindness, or just that right as I consider someone “close” they can just kind of vanish. I opened up to someone and really and truly let them see the real me, and in a completely random instance they just kind of fell out of communication. It’s far beyond moved on from, but it’s just another moment in time that’s chipped away at my vulnerability that felt right to sing about with this song. Obviously this song strays pretty far from the rest of the record sonically but I think it’s a perfect breath of fresh air amongst the overall aggressive sound.

Split My Soul

I wanted to make a song that reflects on a sense of not feeling like yourself, as you watch something slip away. It’s about wondering if you’ve changed without even realizing it and spending so much time distracted and in motion that you lose track of literally everything around you. It’s about feeling confused, desperate, and defenseless against how easy it is for someone close to you to hurt you. The fear of vulnerability is an idea that crosses over in most of these songs.

Over You

This song is about being stuck in a lethargic state and dwelling on a single moment and numbing yourself with poorly chosen distractions for long enough to take away from time you could, and should, be spending on doing something positive for yourself that will lead to feeling free.

You Got the Wrong Idea

These lyrics kind of cross between the huge but silent effect that judgment from peers or people online can have on kids internally, and the fact that first impressions are not worth what they used to be. In a day where huge assumptions are perceived from things like the Internet, and not on a real first time personal interaction, people decide how they feel about people way too fast and essentially hold themselves back from expanding their own potential connections.

The Same Pain

If you’ve ever put yourself out there for someone to the point of pure mental exhaustion, you will relate to this one. It’s about being there for a person who blatantly takes it for granted and even though your time may be best spent on something else, you still convince yourself that your content in the pain because of how much you care.
