Harley Quinn and Joker almost had an odd ‘Suicide Squad’ love triangle

Suicide Squad director David Ayer is continuing to be vocal on Twitter about the film. This month, Ayer has addressed fan concerns and answered questions regarding the 2016 movie. Now, he’s revealed what could have been an interesting plot point that would really have changed the direction of Suicide Squad

Ayer said that the original script had Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) hooking up. That would sure complicate things in the romance between Quinn and Jared Leto‘s Joker

Two weeks ago, Ayer shared what he really thought about Leto’s portrayal of the Clown Prince Of Crime. Ayer said that his “heart breaks” for Leto and also teased that so much of the actor’s work “remains unseen.”

Leto’s portrayal of Joker has had its fair share of controversy over the years. After Suicide Squad was recut post-filming, many of Leto’s scenes were removed from the movie. This led to speculation that film executives were not impressed by Leto’s Joker.

But, the Joker scenes were not the only thing affected by the recuts and reshoots. Apparently, there was a potential Harley Quinn love triangle that was only removed by the reshoots. Seeing as how there is no trace of any Deadshot and Quinn romance, the reshoots did their job pretty well.

In a recent Twitter post, Ayer revealed what could have been when a fan asked what happened to the character of Diablo in the original film. Ayer answers this and then hits a moonshot out to left field by mentioning the Deadshot and Quinn romance.

Diablo survived originally, Harley and Deadshot hooked up as a couple. This was changed during reshoots.

It does make a bit of sense as Suicide Squad focused primarily on Deadshot and Quinn and it could be that a lot of what was cut showed them beginning a relationship. What doesn’t add up is how that would affect the on-screen relationship between the Joker and Quinn. We know that a massive amount of Leto’s Joker material was cut so potentially, this could have contained a number of scenes depicting these events.

Warner Brothers Studios confirmed that Suicide Squad‘s sequel, The Suicide Squad or Suicide Squad 2, is arriving August 6, 2021. The film is directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). No information on if the current COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the film’s release date has been shared yet.

But, previous news has shown that Will Smith will not be returning for the film. The decision to remove his character Deadshot altogether was made to give Smith the opportunity to come back in a possible sequel, according to Variety. So that Deadshot and Quinn romance will remain on the back-burner for now.

So now we have two things we absolutely want to see, Justice League‘s Snyder cut and the original Suicide Squad cut.
