System Of A Down confirm new album is in the works

After speculation that System of a Down might be working on a new album, drummer John Dolmayan confirmed that it's happening and also told Kerrang what that album might just sound like.

It all started with some speculative Instagram posts made by bassist Shavo Odadjian featuring what appeared to be the band in the recording studio.

One thing a lot of fans noticed after seeing these pictures however, was the absence of vocalist Serj Tankian.

If the pictures didn't get you excited—then the news came out that they would be headling Download Festival 2017 alongside Biffy Clyro and Aerosmith. This will be the third time they will headline this festival, with the previous two times being in 2005 and 2011.

In an interview with Kerrang, drummer John Dolmayan elaborated on what the new album might entail.

“Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things. We’re not trying to make ‘Toxicity’ Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels,” said Dolmayan.

Toxicity was released in 2001 and went 3x RIAA Platinum, meaning it sold over 3,000,000 units.

Dolmayan also confirmed that the band has written 15 songs for the new album so far, and that this has been in the works for the last six months.

“I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now.”

System of a Down's next live performance will be on June 1 in Zurich, Switzerland as the band will perform at several festivals all throughout Europe.
