Taco Bell unveils cheesy new item to ease pain of dropped menu favorites

Taco Bell broke our hearts this week when they unveiled plans to revamp their menu which includes the removal of nine items and changing up the combos.

Now, they’re trying to entice us with cheese to soothe our aching hearts.

The fast-food chain is introducing a Toasted Cheddar Chalupa this fall that is essentially a taco with cheddar cheese baked into the shell. Are you hungry yet?

Taco Bell takes six-month aged sharp cheddar and toasts it onto a chalupa shell. While we wish the entire thing was just made out of cheese, the added crispy cheese blanket is definitely something we’ll welcome with open arms.

You get a choice of beef, chicken or steak and it comes with lettuce, tomatoes, more cheese and sour cream.

“At Taco Bell, we get excited by the ‘what if’s’ we can dream up and bring to life for our fans — and the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa is an example of just that,” Liz Matthews, chief food innovation officer at Taco Bell Corp, said in a press release. “We know cheese makes everything better, and baking aged cheddar into the shell of an already iconic product is a game changer our fans will love.”

As previously stated, Taco Bell is changing its menu. The news was revealed via the Taco Bell Twitter and a blog post on the fast-food chain’s website.

“Have you ever had that moment (or several moments, no judgment) where you just want to chop all your hair off, buy new clothes and get a fresh, new start? Well, we kind of did a thing,” the blog post says.

“With fall on the horizon, we thought this would be a great moment for us to kick off the new season in style. Beginning September 12th, 2019, we’re revamping our menu. Are you ready for this glo-up?”

The menu changes involve the removal of nine items while updating the combo options.

“Look, we get it,” the Taco Bell blog adds. “We all have our go-to order and change can be hard. But sometimes it’s good to get outside of your comfort zone and spice things up a bit. So the next time you go to Taco Bell®, we hope it’s easier for you to find something new. If not, just close your eyes and say, ‘give me whatever a Combo #5 is now.’”

You can see what will be removed below.

  • Beefy Mini Quesadilla
  • Chips & Salsa
  • Chipotle Chicken Loaded Griller
  • Double Decker® Taco
  • Cool Ranch & Fiery Doritos® Locos Tacos
  • Double Tostada
  • Power Menu Burrito
  • XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito

Fortunately, it looks like there may be a slight loophole regarding these changes as All-American Rejects guitarist Mike Kennerty points out.

The menu is slated to change September 12. You can view the updated combo options here.
