‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack outsells every album in 2018

The Greatest Showman dominated the charts in 2018. Including regular studio albums, the Greatest Showman’s soundtrack was the number-one-selling record of the year.

According to BuzzAngle Music, the Greatest Showman soundtrack outsold other big releases such as Drake’s Scorpion, Eminem’s Kamikaze and even the A Star Is Born soundtrack, which came in second.

In fact, when looking at album sales alone, the Greatest Showman sold double that of A Star Is Born with 1,274,021 copies. The soundtrack was the only album this year that sold over 1 million copies.

Despite being the top-selling album of the year, that doesn’t mean it was the top album under all consumptions. According to BuzzAngle Music, after taking into consideration individual song purchases and the number of streams, the Greatest Showman soundtrack came in at number four behind Scorpion, Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys and ? by XXXTentacion.

With that being said, the data is showing some very tell-tale signs of who is actually buying full albums. With a number of movie soundtracks topping the list, this tells us that cinema and musical lovers are more inclined to listen and purchase an entire album as opposed to individual tracks. Additionally, they seem less likely to stream soundtracks on platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music.

Last week, it was also revealed that the Greatest Showman was the second-highest selling vinyl record of the year. In vinyl-form, the soundtrack sold 32,300 copies. Check out the full list of top-selling vinyl here.
