'The Greatest Showman' sequel is reportedly in the works "right now"

After the massive success of The Greatest Showman, it should come as no surprise that a sequel to the film would soon be in the works. Now, director Michael Gracey has revealed that we just might end up seeing that sequel sooner than we think.

The Greatest Showman not only dominated the box office, earning an incredible $434 million worldwide, but the amazing soundtrack to the film dominated the charts making it the number-one-selling album of 2018.

The movie remained in theaters for an astounding 219 days, and despite critics predicting it to be a major flop, it went on to become the third highest-grossing musical in history.

“There were huge doubts about it for a very long time and some backers withdrew their money,” Gracey explains to The Sun.

A Hollywood source adds, “The critics hated it and it was predicted to be a massive flop. But then people power took over and there hasn’t been a box office sensation like it in years.”

So obviously, the idea to create a sequel is already in the works.

“When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel,” says Gracey. “So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now.”

It is unclear if the original cast will return for sequel, but Hugh Jackman did tell BBC Radio 5 earlier this year that should the chance arise, he’d eagerly reprise the roll.

“If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I’d get the top hat back out.”

Of course, there might be a tiny snag this time around. The company that originally did the film has been purchased by Disney. So in order for a sequel to happen, they’ll need the green light from the main mouse.

“We have a situation in the business where the company that did it has been sold to Disney, so there are a lot of spinning plates right now. I’m not sure what they would do, but it did take a while to get the first one up, and it’s not to be underestimated how difficult it is to get a musical up and going,” Jackman says.

“But it’s clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters. I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life.”
