‘The Grudge’ revives iconic terrifying shower scene for new poster

The buzz behind the upcoming The Grudge revamp has been building with each passing day. As the production continues to tease images and plotlines, the latest poster will definitely please fans of the 2004 film.

The Grudge rose to popularity with the release of a 2004 remake of the 2002 Japanese horror film, Ju-On. Starring scream queen Sarah Michelle Gellar, the film was full of many scenes that would go down in horror history. However, none were as spinetingling as Gellar’s seemingly normal shower turned horrifying moment.

Now, the reboot is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the U.S. film with the release of a new poster inspired by the iconic scene. Check it out below.

Following its 2004 debut, The Grudge spawned two sequels, The Grudge 2 in 2006 and The Grudge 3 in 2009. News of this upcoming film first surfaced in 2017 with the production setting a summer 2019 release date.

Following a pushed release date, The Grudge finally gave a look at the new evil last month. Entertainment Weekly shared two exclusive photos, which you can check out below.

While the 2004 film took place in Japan, the reboot will take place in America. However, it will be set at the same time as the 2004 movie.

The Grudge is directed by Nicolas Pesce and produced by Sam Raimi (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead). The film centers around a cop named Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) in a town that has a mysterious case that she can’t figure out. It leads to her a house that “has been grudged,” Pesce tells EW, and all hell breaks loose.

“We follow her, as well as two other storylines, that are all interacting with this grudged house in small-town America,” Pesce says. “Like the old films, it’s a tapestry of three different stories that interweave and all take place at slightly different times, centered around this one house that’s at the center of this case that this cop is working on.”

Aside from Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver also star in the film.

Pesce also noted that it isn’t just a remake of the 2004 flick, but will have a new storyline.

“The beauty of The Grudge franchise, both the American and Japanese iterations, is it’s an anthology series. Every movie is a different story of different characters having different interactions with this curse,” Pesce says. “In today’s age where we’re remaking everything, I thought it would be fun to dive into The Grudge universe where we don’t have to remake anything, but rather a new chapter in this canon.”

Pesce later expanded on and further clarified that the movie will explore a new realm of characters and monsters.

“The Grudge is an anthology series,” Pesce tells Den Of Geek. “The movies are [about] different characters, different stories, different locations, different ghosts. Aside from the second and third American remakes, it’s all been very contained to Japan.”

Pesce also explained why they chose to set the upcoming film in the U.S.

“The Grudge is like a virus; it’s super-contagious, so the fact that it would stay in the tiny city of Tokyo is unrealistic,” Pesce says. “It exists in Asia, Europe, Africa, in America, because it has spread. I know a lot of people think this is a remake of a remake, which is isn’t… this movie exists in the same world as the Japanese movie, we’re just adding a chapter.”

The Grudge will release in theaters on January 3.
