‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ holiday film debate settled by composer

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas made its hauntingly fun debut in October 1993 following Jack Skellington’s self-discovery as the Pumpkin King after he tries to take over Christmas.

Composer Danny Elfman, who provided Skellington’s singing voice for the film, has revealed the true meaning of the cult classic. He has also worked with Burton on several film scores including Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Alice In Wonderland, and more.

26 years after the film’s release he answered the lingering question: Is Nightmare a Halloween or Christmas movie?

“It’s obviously about Christmas, but for me, it’s a Halloween movie,” Elfman reveals to USA Today. “Growing up, Halloween was my favorite night of the year and Christmas was a troublesome time. Into my adult years, it was a time where a bit of a dark cloud would follow me around–probably carrying over from my childhood until I had my own kids–and then I developed a new, brighter view of Christmas.”

The Pumpkin King might obsess over Christmas for the entirety of the storyline, but Halloween Town is truly where he belongs.

“I also felt very close to Jack Skellington’s plight because I knew what it was like to be the king of my own little world and to want out of that world and want something else,” Elfman continues. “So I felt very close to the holiday of Halloween, but also very close to Jack and what he was going through.”

More on Danny Elfman and The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas is, as usual, making its rounds in the news this spooky season. It has cereal, shoes and coffee.  It’s also the perfect flick because we can watch it during Halloween or Christmas and no one bats an eye. But, what if there was another?

With all the remakes in the works, is Disney remaking the cult classic? Some people sure seem to think so.

The rumors insinuate that either a live-action or a follow-up could be in the works. Now, what is there to substantiate these rumors? Not a lot.

According to Moviehole, a source that has given the site credible and reliable information in the past tipped them that Disney wants “to do something with Nightmare Before Christmas – probably a sequel but live-action possible.”

This information was available back in February. Now, sources close to another site We Got This Covered Now, who, are the same ones who told us an Aladdin sequel was in development before it was later confirmed – have informed the world that the project is still in the works and is definitely happening.

Why no major news outlets have proceeded with this news is perhaps an indication that it’s not news yet, but we can still hope.

The voice of the Pumpkin King himself, Chris Sarandon, spoke out about how he would do anything to revive Jack Skellington.

“I’d crawl on my hands and knees, from the east coast to the west coast, in the spring or the fall, to do it again,” Sarandon shared with ComicBook.com when discussing a sequel. “Of course I would. I love that character and I love that I’m part of a legacy of that character as well.”

Sarandon is also known for some of our favorites The Princess Bride and Child’s Play

Tim Burton has been known to be against a sequel but with the power of Disney, he might not have much say in the matter.

Anyhow, if this is something in the works, we hope for some decent news soon. Be it a remake, a sequel or some type of spin-off, we would love to see our favorites back with a vengeance.
