It’s a sad time for The Walking Dead fans around the world.
This week, it was announced that the hit series is coming to an end after season 11. However, two of the show’s most beloved characters are getting their own spinoff series.
AMC‘s hit series will conclude after season 11 in late 2022. The extended final season will span 24 episodes. As well, the coronavirus-delayed finale and six bonus episodes of season 10 will air in early 2021. All of this means that there are still 31 episodes of The Walking Dead left before it ends for good.
Despite the delays, however, there is still plenty of The Walking Dead content coming soon. The Walking Dead: World Beyond is set to debut on Oct. 4. As well, season 6 of Fear The Walking Dead premieres on Oct. 11.
Now, another The Walking Dead spinoff is in the works. In fact, the new spinoff includes two fan-favorite characters that have been with the show since the very beginning.
Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are getting their own spinoff series. AMC has greenlit the new series that is set to premiere in 2023. The show was created by The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple. As well, current TWD showrunner Angela Kang will act as showrunner on the new series.
Along with the Daryl and Carol spinoff, Gimple has another new The Walking Dead project in the works. Called the Tales of the Walking Dead, the new series is described as “an episodic anthology with individual episodes or arcs of episodes focused on new or existing characters, backstories or other stand-alone experiences.”
This means that characters who died in The Walking Dead universe may come back to life in the new series. Fans might have the opportunity to see these characters shortly before they perished or even before they were introduced to the show.
So, although The Walking Dead is coming to an end, Gimple promises that there’s still plenty left in store.
“It’s been ten years gone by,” Gimple says. “What lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that. What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic. And supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD. And then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”
The Walking Dead originally premiere on Halloween in 2010. At the time, it was the highest-rated cable series launch of all time. Over the years, it remains the most-watched series in cable history.
Naturally, fans are sad to see the series come to an end, but are looking forward to what’s in store. Since the news of the spinoff was revealed, Daryl became a trending topic on Twitter.

The walking dead ending is extremely sad. at least we get 2 spinoffs. It really shows that the end of this was really just the beginning. We also know that Daryl and Carol live cause they’re getting their own show. 🙂 it’s the end of an era y’all.
