The Killers’ Brandon Flowers talks negativity at band's start: "It came from a place of insecurity"

In an interview with NME, the Killers’ Brandon Flowers opens up about their new song “The Man,” their new album, Wonderful Wonderful, and more. He says their new song is a reflection on the negativity he put out at the band’s start—and his regret with that.

“Around about the time that the Killers started I guess—that’s where 'The Man' harkens back to,” Flowers told NME. “I can live with it, you know. It was nice to sort of go in and inhabit that character, and that figure, and that version of myself for a song.”

He continues, saying that a “good chunk” of their new album, Wonderful Wonderful, is about making peace with his younger self and the negative things he did through a place of insecurity.

“I’ve been cleaning it up for a long time. I don’t think that was really a great representation, an honest representation of who I am,” Flowers tells NME. “It came from a place of insecurity and I would just puff my chest out and say things and put a lot of negativity out there. I basically came to regret that and I’m sure a lot of people can identify with that.”

However, Flowers explains that this album is filtered through a personal lens, making it one that has him focusing more on specific personal experiences in the hopes that it’ll be something that people can connect with.

He goes as far he’s “more bare than I’ve ever been” on Wonderful Wonderful.

“I’m looking in the mirror on this record, focusing a lot on my personal experiences,” Flowers says. “Instead of just drawing on those experiences and using them in other songs, I’m going straight for it. I’m singing about my life, my family, and that’s something different for me.”

And while he focused on the new record, he talks briefly about the band’s previous album, 2012's Battle Born, and the way he feels about the record now.

“On Battle Born, we were searching. You’re always trying, but you’re not always going to find it,” Flowers explains. “I don’t want to take anything away from it. There are songs on it that I love, but just as a whole, I wasn’t very happy with it. This record is just different.”
